Suraj Kund Park is one of the oldest and most culturally significant public spaces in Meerut. The park centers around a large historic pond (Kund) built in 1714 by a wealthy merchant named Lawar Jawahar Lal. It has deep mythological roots; it is believed to be the spot where the legendary Karna fro m the Mahabharata donated his 'Kavach' and 'Kundal' to the Sun God. Today, the park serves as the green lungs of the city, spanning over 18 acres. It is maintained by the Municipal Corporation and features a variety of flowering plants, walking tracks, and a statue of Swami Vivekananda. The outer perimeter of the park is a hub for the famous sports goods industry of Meerut, where tourists can buy high-quality cricket bats and gear at wholesale prices. It is a place where history, mythology, and modern recreation meet. Families often gather here for picnics during the winter months.
