Siju Bird Sanctuary

Baghmara, Meghalaya, India
The Siju Bird Sanctuary is the oldest wildlife sanctuary in Meghalaya, established to protect the diverse avian species of the South Garo Hills. It is situated on a steep, forested hillside that slopes down to the Simsang River. The sanctuary is a critical habitat for both endemic and migratory bir ds, most notably the Grey Peacock Pheasant, which is the state bird of Meghalaya. During the winter months, the river portion of the sanctuary becomes a refuge for migratory ducks like the Siberian Duck, which travel thousands of miles to these warmer waters. The dense tropical vegetation includes giant bamboo, ferns, and various species of wild citrus. The terrain is challenging, involving steep stone steps that lead into the core area, providing a true jungle trekking experience. Beyond birds, the sanctuary is part of an elephant corridor, and lucky visitors might spot Hoolock Gibbons swinging through the canopy. The proximity to the Siju Caves makes it a dual-attraction destination. It offers a profound sense of isolation and a chance to hear the "orchestra of the jungle" without the interference of modern noise.
