Siju Caves

Baghmara, Meghalaya, India
Siju Caves, locally known as Dobakkol (The Bat Cave), is one of the most famous and longest cave systems in the Indian subcontinent. This limestone labyrinth is renowned for its spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, which have formed over eons. The cave contains a massive perennial stream flowin g through its floor, making exploration a wet and adventurous experience. One of the most famous chambers is the Princess Di's Chamber, which features awe-inspiring calcite formations that glitter under torchlight. The cave is home to a massive colony of bats, whose chirping adds to the eerie yet fascinating atmosphere. Scientific exploration of these caves dates back to 1922, making it one of the most thoroughly researched biospeleological sites in Asia. For the casual visitor, the first few hundred meters are accessible and offer a glimpse into the majestic "underworld" of the Garo Hills. Deeper sections require professional equipment and guides due to the water levels and narrow passages. The air inside remains at a constant, cool temperature throughout the year, providing a stark contrast to the humid tropical jungle outside. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in geology, adventure, or the mysteries of the natural world.
