Source of River Lidder

Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India
The Lidder River is a major tributary of the Jhelum River and is one of the most beautiful waterways in Kashmir. Its principal source is the Kolahoi Glacier, located high in the Himalayas. While the river flows through Pahalgam (Lidder Valley), the source glacier is nestled in the mountain range adj acent to the Sonamarg area. The trek to the glacier from the Sonamarg/Kolahoi side is arduous and not the standard tourist route; most visit the river's beautiful flow in Pahalgam. The Kolahoi Glacier is often called the "chief source of water for the major streams of the Kashmir Valley." The water is crystal-clear and frigid, supporting a healthy population of Brown Trout. The source area is a pristine, high-altitude alpine environment with no human habitation, covered in snow and ice for most of the year.
