Thajiwas Glacier

Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India
Thajiwas Glacier is the most popular and accessible tourist spot in Sonamarg. The glacier itself is rapidly receding, but the vast, adjacent snowfields and meadows remain a major draw. The trek is a short, easy-to-moderate climb of about 3 KM from the main road, making it suitable for families and b eginners. Visitors can hire ponies to reach the snowline or trek on foot, passing through dense pine forests and beautiful alpine meadows. It is one of the few places in Kashmir where one can enjoy snow-based activities, like sledging and snow-scooters, well into the summer months (May to August). The area surrounding the glacier is a designated wildlife sanctuary, meaning the natural beauty and ecosystem are protected. Views from the snow point include the majestic mountain panorama of the Thajiwas range. It's a must-visit for a quick, exhilarating experience of the high Himalayas.
