Vishansar Lake

Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India
Vishansar Lake (meaning 'Lake of Vishnu') is a stunning oligotrophic alpine lake situated in the Himalayan mountains of the Ganderbal district. It is a key highlight and the first major lake encountered on the famous Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Fed by melting snow and glaciers, the lake is known for i ts pristine blue-green waters. It is an important source of the Neelum River (also called Kishanganga). The surrounding area, including the adjacent Krishansar Lake and the meadows of Nichnai, is a paradise of lush alpine meadows where local shepherds graze their flocks during the summer. The lake is famous for its Brown Trout fish. Due to heavy snowfall, it remains frozen and inaccessible from late October to early June. Its magnificent backdrop of towering, snow-capped peaks makes it a spiritual and photographic marvel.

    Glacial-Alpine Hydro-Architecture:

Dimension: The lake covers a substantial area, often quoted as around 0. 9 square kilometres (varies by season). Its depth can exceed 20-30 meters. The surrounding landscape's Architecture is defined by the high pass (Nichnai Pass at 4,100 M) that must be crossed to reach it, and the deep, naturally carved basin holding the water. The only man-made structures are temporary stone shelters and shepherd huts (kothas). The pristine Architecture of the lake basin is a natural wonder, showcasing the power of water and ice. The high peaks of the Kashmir Himalaya surround it in a perfect natural amphitheatre.
