Travel Tips Of Balakumari Temple
Berhampur, Odisha, India
Balakumari Temple is a highly revered hilltop shrine located on the Kerandimala mountain range near Chikiti in Ganjam, approximately 37 kilometers from Berhampur. Dedicated to Maa Balakumari, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, this temple is a significant pilgrimage site for the people of Southern Od isha and Northern Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated at a considerable height, requiring devotees to climb exactly 1240 steps to reach the sanctum. This climb is not just a physical challenge but a spiritual journey, with each step offering increasingly beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and the distant coastline. Historically, the temple was patronized by the royal family of Chikiti, who considered the deity their presiding guardian. The atmosphere at the hilltop is serene and spiritual, often enveloped in a cool mist during the early mornings. Upon reaching the top, visitors are greeted by the sight of the traditional Odia temple architecture and the powerful idol of the goddess. The panoramic view of the Ganjam district from the temple premises is one of the best in the region, making the strenuous climb worth the effort. At the foothills, there is a large Shiva temple featuring a massive Shiva Linga, where pilgrims usually offer prayers before starting their ascent. The temple is surrounded by dense forests that are home to various flora and fauna, adding a natural charm to the religious visit. For those who cannot climb the stairs, a motorable road has been developed that leads almost to the top, making the temple accessible to the elderly and children. The temple is particularly vibrant during festivals, when thousands of devotees gather to seek blessings. The sound of temple bells and the chanting of prayers create a divine energy that resonates through the hills. Balakumari is not just a religious site but also a popular trekking and picnic destination for the youth of Berhampur. The combination of faith, adventure, and natural beauty makes it a standout attraction in the Ganjam tourism map.
