Travel Tips Of Mapithel Dam

Ukhrul, Manipur, India
Engineering and Water Resource Project: The Mapithel Dam, officially known as the Thoubal Multipurpose Project, is a major engineering feat constructed across the Thoubal River. Its primary purposes are vital to the region's infrastructure: generating 7.5 megawatts of hydroelectric power, irrigating over 33,449 hectares of agricultural land, and providing 10 million gallons of drinking water to the state capital, Imphal. The earth dam has a substantial length of 1,120 meters. Completed in recent years (officially inaugurated in 2020), the dam creates a vast water reservoir that has significantly altered the local landscape, forming a large lake surrounded by hills. While essential for development, the project has historically been controversial, involving protests and legal battles from the local affected communities regarding displacement and environmental impact. Today, the dam site and the resulting reservoir are also a place of scenic beauty, particularly the vast expanse of the water body set against the rugged hills, making it a unique destination for visitors interested in large-scale human-made marvels and their interaction with the environment. The reservoir has also fostered new livelihoods, such as large-scale fish rearing (pisciculture) through cage and pen culture, notably for the indigenous Ngahou fish.
