Cheena Bhavana
Cheena Bhavana, the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at Visva-Bharati University, was established in 1937 through the joint efforts of Rabindranath Tagore and the Chinese scholar Tan Yun-Shan. It stands as a symbol of the age-old cultural and spiritual link between India and China. Tagore envisioned this institute as a "nucleus for cultural exchange," aiming to revive the historic relationship that existed during the era of the Silk Road and Buddhist missions. The building was inaugurated by Tagore himself, who emphasized that it was not just a place for learning a language, but a site for the "union of hearts." The library here is one of the most significant in the world for Sinological studies, housing over 44,000 books, including rare Buddhist scriptures like the Taisho Tripitaka and the Ssu-ku Ch'uan-shu.
