Ningel Village is a unique cultural and historical site famous for its age-old tradition of salt making from natural brine wells. This is one of the very few places in Northeast India where salt is still produced using traditional methods that date back centuries. The village houses several ancient salt wells, which are considered sacred and are protected by the local deity, Thumkong Lairembi. The process involves collecting saltwater from these deep wells and boiling it in large iron pans until the water evaporates, leaving behind crystalline salt. This salt, known as 'Ningel Thum', is highly valued for its medicinal properties and unique taste. The village itself is picturesque, nestled at the foot of the hills with a slow-paced life. A visit to Ningel offers a rare look into a dying craft that was once the backbone of the Manipuri economy before the arrival of factory-made salt. The residents are extremely proud of their heritage and are happy to explain the process to interested visitors. It is an essential stop for anyone interested in the ethnographic history of Manipur.
