The Chhatris (Cenotaphs) of the Scindia Dynasty in Shivpuri are a magnificent collection of memorial structures that represent the finest example of Indo-Mughal and Hindu architecture in the region. Situated in a formal, sprawling Mughal-style garden on the picturesque banks of the Sakhya Sagar Lake , these cenotaphs were built in honor of the deceased members of the powerful Scindia royal family of Gwalior, who used Shivpuri as their summer capital. The most prominent cenotaphs belong to Madhav Rao Scindia I and his mother, Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia, standing facing each other as a symbol of familial reverence. Unlike tombs, chhatris do not contain the remains of the deceased but are symbolic monuments to commemorate their legacy and spirit.
