Kuno National Park

Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India
Kuno National Park, recently made world-famous by the Project Cheetah reintroduction program, is a vast wilderness area spanning over 748 square kilometers. Originally established as a sanctuary in 1981, it was upgraded to a National Park in 2018. The park is bisected by the Kuno River, which acts as a lifeline for the flora and fauna. The landscape is a mix of dry deciduous forests, sprawling grasslands (chauri), and rocky hills, very similar to the Serengeti in Africa. Apart from the newly introduced Cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa, the park is home to Leopards, Indian Wolves, Striped Hyenas, and various ungulates like Sambar, Chital, and Blackbuck. The park was initially prepared to host Asiatic Lions, but now it serves as the global spotlight for cheetah conservation. Visitors can enjoy jeep safaris through the various zones like Tiktoli and Ahera. The birdlife is equally impressive, with numerous raptors and water birds frequenting the river banks. The conservation efforts here involve extensive community participation, especially from the local Sahariya tribes who were relocated to create a human-free core zone. The park offers a true wilderness experience, far more rugged and authentic than many of the more commercialized parks in India.
