Jadhav Sagar Lake

Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India:
Jadhav Sagar Lake is one of the older water bodies in Shivpuri, constructed between 1915 and 1932 under the supervision of the Scindia's Chhatri Trust. Originally designed to cover a significant area with a considerable depth, its primary purpose was to supply water to the elaborate fountains, kunds (stepped tanks), and gardens of the nearby Chhatri area, the beautiful cenotaphs of the Scindia rulers. It also briefly served as a popular recreational spot for boating in its early years. Today, the lake, while still retaining its historical significance, is unfortunately facing environmental challenges such as pollution and the growth of invasive water hyacinth. Despite this, it remains an important urban water reservoir and a symbol of the Scindia rulers' commitment to city beautification and water management. Its proximity to the city center and the historical Chhatris makes it a notable landmark, representing a blend of environmental history and royal legacy in Shivpuri. Efforts for its conservation and rejuvenation are often discussed, highlighting its importance to the city's ecosystem and heritage.:

The architecture is primarily Hydraulic Engineering and Heritage Management: The lake itself is a man-made reservoir constructed for aesthetic and functional purposes related to the nearby royal cenotaphs.

Dimension and Scale: Historically, it covered over 50 hectares with a maximum depth of 15 feet, though these dimensions fluctuate greatly now due to environmental factors.

Dam and Canal Design: The engineering focused on creating an efficient water source, involving the construction of simple earthwork dams and rudimentary canal systems to channel water to the Chhatris area.

Surrounding Structures: The true architectural interest lies in the adjacent Chhatris, which feature intricate Maratha and Rajput style stone carvings, domes, and kiosks, which the lake was meant to complement. :
