History of Sathanur Dam: The Sathanur Dam is a massive gravity dam constructed across the Thenpennai River, also known as the Pennaiyar River, nestled among the Chennakesava Hills in the Thandarampet Taluk. The project was initiated during India's First Five Year Plan, with construction beginning in 1953 and the dam becoming operational in 1958. It was officially inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj, and was a flagship irrigation project of that era. Its primary purpose is to provide an essential Irrigation Lifeline for the agricultural fields in the Tiruvannamalai and adjoining districts, ensuring food security for the region. The reservoir created by the dam is called the Sathanur Reservoir. Beyond its utilitarian function, the dam site has been meticulously developed into a popular tourist and recreational hub. The vast, well-maintained parks, often used as filming locations for the Tamil film industry, along with a unique crocodile farm and a fish grotto, draw visitors from far and wide, making it a multifaceted attraction. The dam is one of the major dams in Tamil Nadu, showcasing mid-20th-century engineering prowess combined with a commitment to public recreational spaces. The dam plays a critical role in flood control, regulating the flow of the Thenpennai River during the heavy Monsoon season, thereby protecting downstream communities from devastating floods, solidifying its place as a vital regional asset.
