Nature Overview: Kanakai Water Falls, also known as Kanakadurga Waterfalls, is a hidden natural wonder located near Girnur village. The falls are formed on the Kadem River and are famous for their rugged beauty and adventurous trekking trails. This site is actually a series of three distinct waterf alls: the small Kanakai falls, the main Bandrev falls, and the mysterious Cheekati Gundam. The water cascades from a height of about 30 feet into a deep, wide pool that is perfect for swimming. Surrounded by dense forests and ancient rock formations, it offers a serene escape for nature lovers. The name is derived from the Kanaka Durga temple situated right at the entrance of the falls. During festivals, the temple attracts many local tribal devotees, adding a cultural layer to the visit. The trek from the village to the falls involves navigating rocky terrain and forest paths for about 2 kilometers. It is considered one of the most beautiful "hidden gems" of the Sahyadri mountain range in Telangana. The panoramic view from the top of the falls is breathtaking, showcasing the winding river and thick canopy. Unlike the more crowded Kuntala Falls, Kanakai offers a more secluded and raw experience of the wilderness. The sound of the gushing water echoing through the trees creates a tranquil atmosphere. It is a favorite spot for photographers looking to capture the pristine beauty of the Adilabad forests. The site is best visited during the post-monsoon months when the river is full and the greenery is at its peak.

How to Reach

By Air: Hyderabad International Airport is the closest airport, situated about 280 KMS from the falls. From there, you can take a bus or a car to Ichoda or Adilabad and then hire a local vehicle for the final stretch.

By Train: The nearest railhead is Adilabad, which is 51 KMS away. You can take a train to Adilabad and then use a combination of bus and auto-rickshaw to reach Girnur village, which serves as the base for the waterfall trek.

By Road: Drive on NH 7 (now NH 44) from Hyderabad toward Adilabad. Take a left at Ichoda and proceed toward Bazarhatnoor via Girnur. The roads are paved until the village, after which a mud road leads toward the forest.

By Local Transport: From Ichoda or Adilabad, you can find local buses going toward Bazarhatnoor. From there, you will need to hire a private auto to Girnur. Hiring a local villager as a guide for the 2-km walk is highly recommended.
