How To Reach Krishna's Butter Ball

Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Ancient Geologic Mystery:This famous granite boulder, locally known as Vaan Irai Kal ('Stone of the Sky God'), is a natural wonder, not a man-made sculpture, that has become an iconic symbol of Mahabalipuram. It is a massive, roughly spherical rock, estimated to be about 6 meters (20 feet) high and 5 meters (16 feet) wide, and weighing approximately 250 tons. The boulder rests precariously on a short, slippery slope of a hill, seemingly defying the laws of gravity as it stands on a base of less than 1.2 meters. Legend attributes its position to Lord Krishna, claiming it is a stolen dollop of butter dropped by the deity, hence the popular name. Its stability has baffled scientists and engineers for centuries; it is believed to have been in this exact position for over 1,200 years, surviving cyclones and seismic events. An attempt by the British Governor of Madras, Arthur Havelock, in 1908 to move the boulder with the help of seven elephants failed. The rock is a beloved spot for tourists who enjoy posing for photos as if they are trying to push the rock, despite it being a protected national monument by the ASI. The sheer impossibility of its balance is a source of local pride and an enduring mystery.
