How To Reach Nilagrad River

Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India
Nilagrad River is a small but culturally and geologically unique mountain stream that flows near Sonamarg. Its name, 'Nilagrad', is a composite term, and locally it is renowned for its distinct reddish water, which is a result of a high concentration of iron and other minerals leaching from the sur rounding rocks. This unique coloration is particularly visible where the stream meets the mighty, clear blue-grey waters of the Indus River at the Baltic Colony, creating a striking confluence. For the local populace, the river is sacred, and its water is believed to possess potent healing properties, particularly for skin ailments. A ritual known as the 'Zool' is often performed on Sundays, where locals take a purifying dip in the cold waters. The surrounding area provides a gentle contrast to the rugged mountains, featuring lush meadows and a serene riverside environment perfect for picnics and quiet contemplation.
