How To Reach Telaiya Dam

Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, India
Engineering Milestone: Telaiya Dam holds a special place in India's industrial history as the first dam constructed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) in 1953. Built across the Barakar River, it was a pioneering effort in flood control and hydroelectric power generation for the newly independen t nation. The dam stands at a height of 99 feet and stretches 1200 feet across a narrow gorge, representing a monumental feat of mid-20th-century civil engineering. Scenic Landscape: The reservoir created by the dam covers a vast area of 36 square kilometers, surrounded by the picturesque hills of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The deep blue waters of the lake against the backdrop of dense green forests create a Mediterranean-like vibe in the heart of Jharkhand. It is widely considered the most beautiful dam in the region, offering breathtaking views that change with the seasons. Tourist Magnet: Over the decades, Telaiya Dam has evolved from a purely functional utility into a premier tourist destination. It serves as a major weekend getaway for people from Hazaribagh, Koderma, and Ranchi. The area is perfect for those looking to escape the hustle of city life, providing a serene environment where the air is fresh and the views are endless. It is a place where nature and human ingenuity coexist beautifully. Ecological Haven: The reservoir and the surrounding forests provide a habitat for various species of birds and aquatic life. During the winter, migratory birds can often be spotted near the water's edge, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers. The nearby Urvarn tourist complex and various islands within the lake, like Chacha Nehru Island, add to the charm, offering exploration opportunities within the vast water body.

How to Reach

By Air: Patna Airport (PAT) is 165 KMS away, and Ranchi Airport (IXR) is about 170 KMS away. Most tourists prefer flying into Ranchi and taking a scenic road trip through the Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary to reach the dam. The drive offers beautiful views of the valley and is a highlight of the journey.

By Train: Koderma Railway Station is the most convenient gateway, located just 22 KMS from the dam. It is a major station on the New Delhi-Howrah route. From Koderma, plenty of trekkers (shared jeeps) and private autos run frequently to the dam site. The journey takes about 45 minutes by road.

By Road: The dam is situated on the Hazaribagh-Koderma Road. If coming from Hazaribagh town, it is a 52 KMS drive via NH-20. The road is in excellent condition and passes through dense forests. Regular buses ply between Hazaribagh and Koderma, and you can simply get off at the Tilaiya Dam stop.

By Local Transport: Local buses and shared autos are the most economical ways to reach. If you are staying in Jhumri Telaiya town, you can hire a dedicated auto for a round trip. For groups, renting a traveler or a car from Hazaribagh for a full-day excursion is the best way to enjoy the dam and nearby attractions like Canary Hill.
