Mariam's Tomb

Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India
Historical Context: The tomb was built between 1623 and 1627 AD by Emperor Jahangir for his mother, Mariam-uz-Zamani (born Rajkumari Heer Kunwari), one of the principal wives of Emperor Akbar. Originally, the structure was a Baradari (pleasure pavilion) built during the reign of Sikander Lodi in 149 5 AD, which Jahangir later converted and remodeled into a mausoleum after her death. Cultural Significance: It is the only tomb of an Akbar's wife to be buried close to him at Sikandra. It represents an early phase of Mughal architecture before the widespread use of white marble. The site also suffered damage and remodelling during the British rule when it was repurposed as a printing press for an orphanage.
