Parunthumpara

Thekkady, Kerala, India
Overview of Parunthumpara: Parunthumpara is a massive rock formation and a scenic hill station that offers an unparalleled bird's-eye view of the deep ravines and lush forests of Idukki. The name Parunthumpara translates to "Eagle Rock," inspired by the eagle-like shape of the rock and the fact that eagles are often seen soaring high above this precipice. It is located between Peermade and Thekkady, making it a perfect stopover for travelers. The area is famous for its vast stretches of grasslands and the dramatic cliffs that drop thousands of feet into the valley below. From here, one can see the silver lines of the Azhutha River flowing through the forest and the distant peaks of the Sabarimala hills. The atmosphere is often misty, with clouds floating at the same level as the viewpoint, giving visitors a "walking on clouds" experience. The District Tourism Promotion Council has built protective walls along the edge for safety, as the drops are quite steep. It is an ideal spot for those who love wide-open spaces and the raw, untamed beauty of the Western Ghats. The breeze here is constant and refreshing, making it a popular spot for a quick break or a long evening of contemplation.
