Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India:
An Exclusive Estate of Leisure and History: Kamla Retreat is a historic and sprawling private estate located in the Nawabganj area of Kanpur, owned by the prominent and influential Singhania industrial family (the founders of JK Group). Built in 1960 by Padam Pat Singhania, the retreat is a stunning complex set amid several acres of lush greenery and is often referred to as a "jewel" of Kanpur. The estate is a private sanctuary but is occasionally opened to the public (though often requiring prior permission) for viewing its numerous unique attractions. The retreat's main highlight is its large, private swimming pool uniquely equipped with machines to produce artificial waves, which was a technological marvel at the time of its construction. The estate also features beautifully maintained, sprawling lawns, serene parks, elegant canals with picturesque bridges, and royal fountains, all designed for recreation and relaxation. Adding a cultural and historical dimension, the complex houses a museum with an exquisite collection of historical, archaeological, and personal artifacts of the Singhania family, including a notable collection of crockery, cutlery, antique paintings, and exquisite murals. Furthermore, the estate includes a small, private indoor zoo and aviary with a collection of reptiles, exotic birds, and other animals. Kamla Retreat represents a unique blend of royal-style leisure, architectural elegance, and historical preservation, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle and patronage of one of India's foremost industrial families:
