A Monument of British Colonial Grandeur: The Governor's House, locally known as the Raj Bhavan, is a spectacular piece of colonial architecture that once served as the summer residence for the British Governors of the North-Western Provinces and later the United Provinces. Today, it is the official residence of the Governor of Uttarakhand. Built in the late 19th century (completed in 1897), the sprawling complex is spread over an immense area of 205 acres and is an architectural replica inspired by the Scottish Castle style, particularly reminiscent of Buckingham Palace. The palace is set amidst lush green forests of Deodar and Oak, featuring expansive, manicured gardens, a deer park, a swimming pool, and the famous Raj Bhavan Golf Course, one of India's oldest and most beautiful golf courses. The building itself is a two-storey structure with 113 rooms, reflecting the lavish lifestyle of the British elite during the colonial era. Visitors are generally allowed to tour the grounds and the gardens, though the main residential quarters are restricted. It stands as a significant historical landmark, symbolizing the British legacy in the Himalayan foothills and is maintained with pristine care, making it a serene and picturesque spot for history buffs and architecture admirers. The sheer scale and opulence of the estate are breathtaking.
