The Nillai Tea Estate, nestled in the picturesque Talui village, is a unique and significant landmark as it is known to be the only operational tea estate in the entire state of Manipur. Situated on a steep slope of the Nilai Kaphung mountain range, the estate is characterized by its lush, terraced green landscape, which provides a stunning visual contrast against the surrounding darker forests. The estate is highly regarded for cultivating premium quality green and black tea varieties using the traditional Orthodox Method (involving withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying) rather than the common CTC method, which preserves the rich aroma and robust flavor. The tea produced here is also known locally for its supposed medicinal qualities, highly valued by the Tangkhul community. A distinguishing local feature is the tea's flavor being most pronounced on the second boil. The estate is a source of pride for the locals, and a visit offers a tranquil experience, combining natural beauty with a glimpse into local, dedicated, small-scale tea production.

Health & Safety: The slopes are steep and can be slippery; wear robust, non-slip footwear. Be cautious of stinging insects in the fields. Carry basic first aid.

Packing Essentials: Carry warm layers even in summer, as the altitude makes the air cool. Bring a waterproof jacket and sun protection (hat, sunscreen) as the sun is strong at this altitude.

Accommodation:

Accommodation is very limited in Talui; plan to stay in Ukhrul town (45 KM away) for better guesthouse/hotel options.

Other Tips (Purchasing): Buy your tea before leaving; it is often unavailable elsewhere. Respect the workers' privacy; always ask before taking photos.
