Historical Significance: The Swayambhu Devalayam (or Swayambhu Shambu Lingeshwara Swamy temple) was once the most important and grandest temple in the Kakatiya capital, Orugallu, and the patron deity shrine of the Kakatiya rulers, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built by King Ganapatideva in the 13t h century CE, marking the shift of the capital from Hanamkonda to Warangal and making it the spiritual heart of the dynasty. The name 'Swayambhu' refers to the central Shiva Linga believed to have emerged naturally from the earth (self-incarnated). Destruction and Ruins: Tragically, the magnificent temple was systematically destroyed in 1323 CE during the final siege and conquest of Warangal Fort by the Tughlaq army under Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Today, the site consists of scattered, priceless ruins, including intricately carved pillars, brackets, and ceilings, along with the partially-preserved central Swayambhu Lingam. Cultural Legacy: The ruins still provide crucial archaeological insights into the peak of Kakatiya temple architecture and sculpture. The surviving carvings depicting dancers inspired Acharya Nataraj Ramakrishna to revive the traditional Deccan dance form of Perini Shivathandavam, cementing the site's role in cultural revival.
