Scientific Excellence and Research: The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Established in 1968 and named after the renowned Indian geologist D. N. Wadia, the institute is a globally recognize d Centre of Excellence for advanced study and research in Himalayan Geology. Its core focus is on the geodynamics, seismology, environmental geology, and natural resource management of the Himalayan region, which is one of the most tectonically active zones in the world. The institute plays a crucial role in understanding and mitigating natural hazards like landslides and earthquakes that affect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and the people living there.Public Education and Museum: Beyond research, WIHG maintains a dedicated public museum and a large library that houses over 20,000 books.
