Valara Waterfalls

Munnar, Kerala, India
Valara Waterfalls is one of the most majestic and powerful waterfalls in the Idukki district, located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi-Munnar highway. Unlike many other falls that dry up in summer, Valara maintains a significant flow throughout the year, fed by the Deviyar River. The waterfall is renowned for its unique structure, cascading down a series of seven distinct rock steps from a height of over 1000 Feet. Surrounded by dense, subtropical forests, the falls create a misty atmosphere that cools the entire surrounding area. It is a popular pit stop for travelers heading towards Munnar, offering a refreshing break from the winding mountain roads. The sheer volume of water during the monsoon is a sight to behold, producing a thunderous roar that can be heard from a great distance. The lush greenery surrounding the falls is home to various species of mountain birds and small mammals, making it a mini-biodiversity hotspot. While the waterfall is visible from the road, the more adventurous can take small trails to get a closer view of the lower tiers. The water is crystal clear and remains cold even during the peak of summer. The sight of the white, frothy water against the dark, wet rocks and the vibrant green foliage creates a perfect natural contrast. It is often visited along with the nearby Cheeyappara Waterfalls, which is just 1 KM away. The area around the falls is also known for its spice plantations, and the air often carries the scent of cardamom and pepper. For many, Valara is the first true introduction to the wild, untamed beauty of the Western Ghats as they begin their ascent into the high hills of Kerala.
