Mahal Gulala

Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India
History of Mahal Gulala: Mahal Gulala is an enchanting historical site situated on the banks of the Badi Utaoli river. According to local folklore and historical accounts, this palace was built by Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) for a beautiful singer and dancer named Gulara. The prince fe ll deeply in love with her during his tenure as the Governor of the Deccan. The palace served as a private retreat and a pleasure garden where the couple spent many romantic evenings. The site consists of two identical pavilions built on opposite banks of the river, connected by a masonry dam that once created a beautiful artificial lake. The architecture reflects the early Mughal aesthetic of integrating buildings with natural water bodies. Over time, the palace fell into ruins, but it still retains a haunting beauty that tells a story of love, art, and tragedy. It is often overshadowed by the larger monuments in the city but offers a much more tranquil and intimate experience for those interested in the personal history of the Mughals.
