Mahal Gulara

Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India
History of Mahal Gulara: Mahal Gulara is often confused with Mahal Gulala because they are part of the same complex. While Gulala refers to the specific lover, Gulara is the name associated with the entire village and the twin buildings. Built by Shah Jahan in the 17th century, these two structures are identical in design and face each other across the Utawali river. The purpose was to create a cool, breezy environment for the Emperor to enjoy musical performances by Gulara. The site is a testament to the Mughal passion for "water palaces." The water from the river was allowed to flow over a stepped weir, creating a cooling mist and a soothing sound. This was a proto-air-conditioning system. After the death of Gulara, who was reportedly murdered due to court intrigues, the Emperor's interest in the place waned, but it remains a significant site for understanding the private life of the man who would eventually build the Taj Mahal. It is a place where history feels very close and personal.
