Gandhamardan Hills
The Ayurvedic Treasure: Gandhamardan Hills is a legendary mountain range mentioned in the Ramayana. It is famously believed to be a portion of the Himalayas that Lord Hanuman dropped while carrying the Sanjeevani herb to save Laxman. This hill is a biological goldmine, housing over 5,000 species of rare medicinal plants used in traditional Ayurveda. It spans across the border of Bargarh and Balangir districts, with the famous Nrusinghanath Temple on its northern slope and Harishankar on the southern. The hills are also a site of great historical importance, having once been a center for Buddhist learning, as noted by the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang, who called it Po-lo-mo-lo-ki-li. Today, it is a Biodiversity Heritage Site, protected by local tribal communities who have lived in harmony with the forest for generations. The air here is noticeably cooler and filled with the scent of wild herbs and fresh spring water.
