Patneswari Temple
The Patneswari Temple in Patnagarh is a historically significant Shakti shrine dedicated to Goddess Patneswari, an incarnation of Durga. This temple was the presiding deity of the ancient Patna kingdom and is one of the oldest Shakti Pithas in Western Odisha. The current structure was built by the Chauhan kings, specifically King Ramai Dev, in the 14th century. The goddess is worshipped in a unique form, and the temple is known for its "Sabaritantra" or tribal tantric roots. Interestingly, the priests here are often from the royal lineage rather than traditional Brahmins. The temple complex also houses the Kosaleswar Shiva temple, creating a harmonious blend of Shaiva and Shakta traditions. The pillars of the temple are famous for their ancient carvings depicting dancers, musicians, and various Hindu deities. It is believed that the temple has been a center of worship for over 2000 years, evolving through various dynasties.
