History Of Annapurna Devi Mandir

Deity and Significance: The Annapurna Devi Mandir is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, and is considered the Goddess of Food and Nourishment. It is believed that no one in the city of Kashi (Varanasi) will ever go hungry, as the goddess protect s and feeds her devotees. This temple holds immense spiritual significance for pilgrims. Historical Context: The present structure was constructed in the 18th century (1729 AD) by the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I. It is located very close to the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, making it an essential stop on the pilgrimage circuit. The temple architecture is in the traditional Nagara style. Mythology: According to legend, Lord Shiva once told Parvati that the world and all its contents, including food, are an illusion (Maya). To show the importance of food, Parvati disappeared from the world, causing a severe famine. Lord Shiva eventually came to Varanasi to beg for food, and Parvati, in the form of Annapurna (holding a ladle and a golden bowl), fed him and then set up a kitchen (Bhandar) in Varanasi for her devotees. Spiritual Practice: Devotees worship the goddess to seek her blessings for a life of prosperity, abundance, and freedom from hunger. A dip in the Ganges and worship at this temple are considered highly auspicious. :
