Tulsi Ghat

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India
Tulsi Ghat is one of the most historically significant riverfronts in Varanasi, deeply revered for its association with the legendary saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas, who lived here in the 16th Century. It is widely believed that he composed a major portion of the Ramcharitmanas, the Awadhi version of the Ramayana, at this very spot, making it a pilgrimage site for literature and spirituality lovers alike. The ghat was originally known as Lolark Ghat after the nearby sun well, but was renamed to honor the saint who breathed his last here in 1623. Today, the ghat retains a rustic and soulful charm, housing a small museum within the house where Tulsidas resided, which contains his wooden clogs, a piece of the boat he used, and an idol of Lord Hanuman he personally consecrated. Unlike the bustling and commercialized main ghats, Tulsi Ghat offers a quieter, more reflective atmosphere where the echoes of ancient chants and the gentle flow of the Ganges create a meditative environment. It is a place where history, faith, and the literary heritage of India converge, attracting scholars, devotees, and travelers seeking the authentic spirit of Kashi away from the massive crowds. :
