How To Reach Forest Research Institute

Historical Significance: The Forest Research Institute (FRI), established in 1906 as the Imperial Forest Research Institute, stands as a monumental landmark in Dehradun, embodying the history of scientific forestry in India. It was originally founded by Dietrich Brandis in 1878 as the British Imperi al Forest School. Role in Forestry: This deemed university is a sprawling campus dedicated to forestry research, education, and training, attracting thousands of students and researchers annually. It is widely considered the biggest forest-based training institute in the country. The Campus: The campus is spread over a massive 450 hectares with the stunning backdrop of the outer Himalayas. Its lush green lawns and pristine environment make it a popular picnic and sightseeing spot, often featuring in Bollywood films. Museums and Academics: FRI houses six key museums: Pathology, Social Forestry, Silviculture, Timber, Non-Wood Forest Products, and Entomology, showcasing various aspects of forest science. It also hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) and the Central Academy for State Forest Services (CASFOS), cementing its position as a cradle for Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers. The institution plays a vital role in national and international forestry research.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED), approximately 30-35 KMS away. From the airport, hire a pre-paid taxi or a private cab. The journey takes about 1 hour depending on traffic.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Dehradun Railway Station, about 6-7 KMS from FRI. You can easily find local autos (Vikrams), taxis, or city buses (Route No. 6 from Connaught Place/Ghantaghar) to reach the institute.

By Road (Local Transport): FRI is situated on Chakrata Road. The best local transport is the auto-rickshaw (Vikram) or a local city bus running on the Chakrata route. It is easily accessible from any part of the Dehradun city center (Ghantaghar).

By Road (Self-Drive): If driving from outside Dehradun, take the road towards Chakrata from the main city. The landmark for the turn-off is clearly marked. Ample parking is available on the campus. Ensure to enter before the closing time.
