A Repository of Manipuri History: The Manipur State Museum, inaugurated in 1969 by Smt. Indira Gandhi, serves as the primary custodian of the region's rich historical, archaeological, and ethnographic heritage. Located centrally near the Polo Ground, the museum systematically documents and displays the cultural evolution of Manipur, spanning from ancient times to the modern era. The museum’s collection is meticulously categorized into different galleries, including Art and Archaeology, Ethnology, Natural History, and the Children's Gallery. A key highlight is the magnificent 54-foot-long royal boat, Hiyang Hiren, displayed in the open-air enclosure, which was historically used by the Meitei kings for races and ceremonial purposes. The Ethnology section is particularly rich, showcasing the diverse traditional costumes, ornaments, tools, weaponry, and cultural artifacts of the various tribal and ethnic groups residing in Manipur, offering deep insight into their unique ways of life. How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit International Airport (IMF). The museum is approximately 8 km from the airport. Hire a pre-paid taxi or a local auto-rickshaw for the 20-minute drive.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Dimapur (DMV) in Nagaland (~215 km). From Dimapur, take a taxi or bus to Imphal. Once in Imphal, the museum is centrally located and easily reached.

By Road: The museum is situated right next to the famous Polo Ground in the heart of Imphal city. It is easily reachable by car from any part of the state or the city via the major roads.

By Local Transport: Being centrally located, the museum is easily accessible by walking from the Ima Market area, or by hiring a shared/reserved auto-rickshaw from any point in the city. Public minivans also pass close by.
