It is a quintessential representation of Kerala’s spice heartland, set amidst rolling hills and lush valleys. The area is completely dominated by extensive and me ticulously managed spice, coffee, and tea plantations. As you arrive in Murikkady, you are immediately greeted by a rich, invigorating aroma, a blend of various spices like the sweet-citrusy notes of cardamom, the earthy musk of pepper, the pungent sharpness of clove, and the comforting scent of coffee. The primary attraction here is not wildlife but the opportunity to walk through the sprawling, fragrant estates and witness the cultivation of these cash crops firsthand. Guided tours are often available at the local farms and spice gardens, where knowledgeable guides explain the process of growing, harvesting, and processing various spices, offering a fascinating educational experience. It’s an excellent chance to learn where your kitchen spices originate and understand the traditional, age-old agricultural practices unique to the region. Murikkady offers panoramic views of the verdant landscape, with the dense green plantations cascading down the slopes. Nature enthusiasts and photographers find the misty mountains and the vibrant green carpets of the plantations to be an exceptionally picturesque backdrop. The proximity to Kumily makes it easily accessible for a half-day or full-day visit, serving as a peaceful contrast to the adventurous activities inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
