How To Reach Perumal Peak

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India
Geographical and Geological Significance: Perumal Peak, rising majestically to an elevation of approximately 2,440 meters (8,005 ft), is the highest point in the Perumalai Hills and a part of the vast Western Ghats mountain range in Tamil Nadu. Geologically, it is famous for the belief that it is an extinct or dormant volcano, although this theory is often debated among geologists. It is said to have last erupted thousands of years ago, contributing to the distinct landscape of the region. The peak serves as a natural divide, separating the upper Palani Hills to the west from the lower eastern hills. Trekking Haven: The peak is renowned as a paradise for trekkers, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience. The trek typically begins from the foot of the peak near the Perumalmalai Village, located along the Kodaikanal-Palani road. The trail is approximately 7 KM one way, taking about 3 to 4 hours to summit, and is generally considered of moderate difficulty, with some steep sections requiring caution. From the summit, one can witness unparalleled, sweeping, 360-degree panoramic views of the entire Western Ghats, the adjacent Nilgiri Hills on a clear day, the serene plains below, and the surrounding verdant valleys. It is a favored spot for sunrise viewing and overnight camping, though permission may be required.

How to Reach

By Air (Nearest Airport and Connectivity): The nearest airport is Madurai International Airport (IXM), approximately 120 KMS from Kodaikanal. From the airport, a private taxi or bus service is needed to reach the town. The final destination, Perumalmalai Village, is best accessed by road from the town center. Pre-booking a vehicle for the entire day is recommended due to the remoteness of the trek start point.

By Train (Nearest Railway Stations): The nearest railhead is Kodaikanal Road (KQN) (approx. 80 KMS away), but a better-connected option is Madurai Junction (MDU) (approx. 115 KMS). From either station, the traveler must take a public or private bus/cab to reach Kodaikanal town, which takes several hours. The train and road ascent must be completed before the trek can begin.

By Road (Bus and Private Vehicle): Perumal Peak is situated approximately 18 KMS from the Kodaikanal town center, near the Perumalmalai Village on the Kodaikanal-Palani road. Regular State-run public buses ply this route between Kodaikanal and Palani. Trekkers can board a bus from the Kodaikanal Bus Stand and alight at the Perumalmalai bus stop. Private taxis offer a more direct and convenient drop-off at the trek start point, but they are more expensive.

By Local Transport (Reaching the Trek Base): From Kodaikanal town, the most practical local transport is a hired taxi or a shared jeep, especially if travelling in a group. Negotiate a full-day fare that includes waiting time. Alternatively, local buses are the most economical option, but they drop off on the main road, requiring a short walk to the actual trek start. A bicycle is not suitable for this distance and ascent. Ensure you have transport secured for the return journey, as local options are limited at the remote trek base.
