How To Reach Sekta Archaeological Site

Imphal, Manipur, India
Historical Discovery and Excavation: The Sekta Archaeological Site, also known as the Sekta Archaeological Living Museum or Sekta Kei, is a protected site located in Sekta village. It is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Manipur, primarily known for its extensive secondary bu rial finds. Excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the State Archaeology Department, the site has unearthed artifacts dating back to the 14th-15th centuries and possibly earlier, linking to the Proto-Meitei people. This community practiced burying their dead with essential items. The excavation revealed crucial information about the ancient culture, social, and economic life of the people of Antique Kangleipak (Ancient Manipur). The findings have allowed historians to re-evaluate the historical timeline and cultural practices of the early ethnic groups of Manipur, including their burial customs, which involved the re-burial of bones. Artifacts and Cultural Significance: Artifacts recovered include various types of urns, funerary items made of copper, brass, and iron, semi-precious stones, ornaments, pottery, and even a relic casket made of bell metal. The site is a rare example of a well-preserved burial-cum-habitation area. It stands as a profound testament to the region's rich yet often overlooked history. The site is an open-air living museum, offering a tangible link to the past. The burial mounds, of which six were initially identified, represent different social strata or occupational groups, giving a detailed look into the societal structure of the Sekta people. The preservation of these artifacts and the site itself is vital for understanding the complex origins of the Meitei civilization. The experience is both an historical and cultural journey, providing a direct view into the traditions and rituals of a long-ago civilization.:

How to Reach

By Air (Airport to Site): From Imphal International Airport (IMF), hire a pre-paid taxi. The distance is about 25-30 KMS, and the drive takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

By Train (From Dimapur): From Dimapur Railway Station (DMV) (215 KMS), take a shared taxi or state transport bus to Imphal, then switch to local transport (taxi/auto-rickshaw) for the remaining 16 KMS to Sekta village on the Imphal-Ukhrul Road. The bus journey is long but scenic.

By Road (Imphal-Ukhrul Road): The site is situated directly on the Imphal-Ukhrul Road (NH150). From Imphal city center, take a private taxi or an auto-rickshaw (Meitei: Phunung) towards Lamlai/Ukhrul direction. The journey is straightforward and well-marked. The road condition is generally good, offering picturesque views of the surrounding rural Manipur landscape.

By Local Transport (Shared Taxis/Auto-Rickshaws): Shared taxis/vans operating on the Imphal-Lamlai or Imphal-Ukhrul route can drop you near the Sekta village entrance. This is the most cost-effective but less comfortable option. Private hire of an auto-rickshaw for a round trip can also be negotiated for convenience. :
