How To Reach Sheesh Mahal

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India
Living History in a Royal Setting: The Sheesh Mahal (literally, 'Palace of Mirrors') is a magnificent structure within the Orchha Fort Complex that was once a small, opulent royal palace built by Raja Udait Singh in the 18th century, serving as a private residence and later, a reception area for imp ortant guests. Its name comes from the extensive use of shimmering glass, mirror-work, and bright mosaics used to decorate its inner chambers, creating a dazzling effect that reflected the light of candles and lamps. Today, the palace has been lovingly converted into a high-end heritage hotel managed by the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC). This conversion allows visitors the extraordinary opportunity to stay in a building that is an integral part of Orchha's medieval history, sleeping in rooms that were once the private quarters of royalty. The architecture is a later evolution of the Bundeli style, featuring larger arches, slightly more elaborate plasterwork, and a distinct blend of royal residence and guest-house utility. The rooms are designed to retain their historical character while offering modern amenities, with large, high ceilings, traditional furniture, and views of the surrounding fort complex and Ram Raja Temple. Staying here is more than just an accommodation; it is an immersive historical and cultural experience, giving guests exclusive after-hours access to the ambiance of the deserted fort. The hotel often serves as a central hub for all tourist activities, due to its prime location and historical significance, making it the most exclusive and historically resonant stay in the entire town.
