How To Reach Spring Valley Mountain
How to Reach
Cochin International Airport - COK): The nearest major international airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), located at a distance of approximately 150 to 170 KMS from Thekkady/Kumily. After landing at COK, travelers have several options. They can hire a pre-paid taxi or a private cab directly to Kumily (the main town of Thekkady). The journey by road takes about 4 to 5 hours and is highly scenic, passing through various towns and gradually climbing the Western Ghats. Alternatively, travelers can take a bus service from Kochi to nearby towns like Kottayam or directly to Kumily, though the bus journey will take significantly longer and be less comfortable than a private vehicle.
By Train (Nearest Major Railway Station:
Kottayam - KTYM): The nearest major railway station is Kottayam (KTYM), situated approximately 110 KMS away from Thekkady. Kottayam is a significant railway junction in Kerala and is well-connected to major Indian cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi. From the Kottayam station, you will need to hire a taxi or take a state transport bus (KSRTC) directly to Kumily/Thekkady. The road journey from Kottayam to Kumily is about 3 to 4 hours, offering beautiful views as you ascend the hills. Other nearby railway stations are Madurai (Tamil Nadu), which is about 140 KMS away, and Theni, which is closer but with fewer major city connections.
By Road (Thekkady/Kumily to Kurisumala): Thekkady (which essentially means the town of Kumily) is well-connected by road to major cities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. State and private buses run regularly from places like Kochi, Munnar, Kottayam, and Madurai to Kumily. Once you arrive in Kumily, Spring Valley Mountain is relatively close. The distance from the Kumily town center is about 5 to 8 KMS. You can hire a local auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) or, preferably, a local jeep, as the final approach road to the base of the hill may be uneven and steep. A jeep is the most comfortable and reliable option for the final stretch to the trailhead.
By Local Transport (From Kumily Town): From Kumily, the best and most recommended way to reach the base of Spring Valley Mountain is by hiring a local Jeep or a powerful Auto-rickshaw (Tuk-Tuk). Make sure to negotiate the fare for a round trip, including waiting time, before you start. The last few kilometers of the road are on a smaller, rougher track that winds through spice plantations, making a standard car less suitable. Many local taxis and auto drivers are familiar with the route to the Kurisumala trailhead. For the budget traveler, a public bus may drop you off near the general Spring Valley area, but the final trek to the base will be longer.
