Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary
Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary is a breathtaking wilderness area that spans the mighty Mahanadi River in the Angul district of Odisha. Established in 1976, this sanctuary is famous for the 22-kilometer long gorge where the river cuts through the Eastern Ghats mountains, creating a stunning landscape of d eep blue waters and emerald green hills. The name "Satkosia" comes from two words—"Sat" meaning seven and "Kos" meaning a unit of distance—referring to the length of the gorge. It is a part of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve and serves as a vital habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including the endangered Gharial crocodiles, Mugger crocodiles, and the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. The sanctuary is also home to elephants, leopards, and over 300 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The dense deciduous forests provide a lush backdrop for eco-tourism activities such as boating, jungle treks, and sandbar camping. Visitors are often mesmerized by the sheer scale of the gorge and the tranquility of the river, which offers a stark contrast to the busy urban life of Angul.
