Travel Tips Of Kodaikanal Lake

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India
Kodaikanal Lake, also known as Kodai Lake, is the man-made, star-shaped heart of the hill station. It was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then Collector of Madurai, who converted a marshy wetland into a beautiful lake by building an earthen dam across three streams. Located at an alti tude of approximately 2,285 meters above sea level, the lake is the town's most popular geographical landmark and central tourist hub. The circumference of the lake is about 5 KMS, and the road encircling it is popular for cycling and walking. It is surrounded by lush green meadows, a variety of eucalyptus, shola, and pine trees, and features the famous Kodaikanal Boat and Rowing Club. The lake is meticulously maintained and is the focal point for numerous recreational activities, including boating, cycling, and horse riding. It is also the venue for the annual Summer Festival's boat pageantry and flower show, cementing its role as the social and recreational core of the town. Its presence spurred the development of the entire settlement by British and American missionaries.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety (Water & Depth): Never attempt to swim in the lake unless you are a member of the official boat club. The water can be cold and polluted, and the depth is variable (Max depth 11 meters). Always wear a life jacket during boating.Packing Essentials (Comfortable Shoes): Wear comfortable walking/cycling shoes. Bring warm layers, as the lake area gets very chilly and windy, especially in the mornings and evenings. Carry sunscreen for mid-day boating.Accommodation Centrality: Staying near the lake (e.g., at The Carlton) provides the most central access to the entire town. Book lake-view rooms for the best experience.Traffic & Parking: The circular road is a major traffic point. Parking can be difficult during peak hours. Be extremely cautious of traffic if cycling or walking near the road edge.
