How To Reach Gyan Vapi Well

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India:
Spiritual Origin: Gyan Vapi Well literally translates to 'Well of Knowledge' (Gyan means knowledge, Vapi means well). It is a highly sacred well located within the same complex as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the adjacent Gyanvapi Mosque. According to local Hindu belief and Puranic texts, this we ll was created by Lord Shiva with his trident (Trishul) to cool the Jyotirlinga (the radiant lingam of light), and he imparted the sacred Vedic knowledge (Gyan) to Goddess Parvati here. Historical Significance: The well is a point of intense historical and religious contention. It is believed that the original Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva from the old Kashi Vishwanath Temple was hidden or submerged in this well by the temple priest to protect it from destruction during the demolition order of Emperor Aurangzeb in 1669. Present Status: Today, the well is enclosed by a stone screen and is a distinct part of the complex, adjacent to the famous large Nandi statue that faces the mosque (believed by Hindus to be waiting for his Lord). Devotees believe that a drop of water from this well bestows divine knowledge and liberation. Ritual Importance: It is one of the six sacred wells (Vapis) in Kashi and holds a prominent place in the traditional Panchkosi Parikrama (circumambulation) of the holy city, where pilgrims begin or end their sacred walk. :
