How To Reach Panchet Hill

Panchet Hill, also known as Panchakot Pahar, is the second-highest hill in Purulia district, standing tall at an elevation of about 2,100 feet. It is located at the northeastern tip of the district, right on the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand. The hill is a part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau and is covered with dense forests of Sal, Segun, and Palash. Historically, this hill served as a natural fortress for the Panchakot Raj dynasty. At the foot of the hill lie the famous ruins of Garh Panchakot, a 17th-century palace and temple complex that was destroyed during the Bargi (Maratha) invasions in the mid-18th century. The hill itself is shaped like a long crescent and is a major ecological hub, home to wild boars, peacocks, and various medicinal plants. For tourists, the hill offers a unique mix of history, nature, and engineering, as the massive Panchet Dam is built right at its base across the Damodar River. How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur (approx. 70 KM). You can also use Kolkata Airport (250 KM) and hire a car.

By Train: The nearest major railway stations are Asansol Junction (30 KM) and Adra Junction (25 KM). Smaller stations like Kumardubi (16 KM) and Barakar (20 KM) are closer, but fewer express trains stop there. From Asansol or Adra, you can hire a private taxi or take a local bus towards Neturia.

By Road: Panchet Hill is well-connected by road. From Kolkata, take the Durgapur Expressway (NH19) to Asansol, then cross the Dishergarh Bridge to reach Neturia. The distance is roughly 250 KM and takes about 5-6 hours. From Purulia town, it is a 60 KM drive via Raghunathpur. The roads are scenic, especially the stretch crossing the Damodar River.

By Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws and "Trekkers" (jeep-like vehicles) are the most common modes of transport from Neturia or Barakar. You can also hire a "Toto" from nearby stations for short distances. Many resorts provide pick-up and drop-off services from Asansol or Kumardubi stations for a pre-arranged fee. Local buses plying between Asansol and Purulia stop at the Neturia crossing, from where you can take an auto to the hill.
