How To Reach Pandikuzhi

Thekkady, Kerala, India
Pandikuzhi is a mesmerizing destination nestled in the lap of nature, forming a stunning valley that acts as a natural corridor between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The area is renowned for its sheer natural beauty, characterized by dense, vibrant green foliage, rolling hills, and a serene, almost untouch ed atmosphere. It's often described as a picturesque picnic spot and a haven for those seeking tranquility away from the more crowded tourist hubs. The main attraction is a magnificent cascading waterfall, which gushes down the rocky slopes, creating a continuous, refreshing mist and filling the air with the sound of rushing water. This water flow, particularly strong during and immediately after the monsoon season (June to September), collects into small streams that meander through the valley, adding to the lush environment. The valley floor and slopes are rich in diverse flora and fauna, including various spice plantations that contribute the signature fragrant air to the entire Thekkady region. Its proximity to the Periyar National Park means that the ecosystem is well-protected, offering visitors a true slice of the Western Ghats' bio-diversity. The view from Pandikuzhi extends over the plains of Tamil Nadu, providing a spectacular contrast to the high-altitude greenery of Kerala. The raw, untamed landscape makes it an essential visit for nature lovers and a perfect spot for relaxation and quiet contemplation. The experience here is less about structured sightseeing and more about simply immersing oneself in the beauty of the high-range hill country.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Madurai Airport (IXM) in Tamil Nadu, located approximately 140 KMS away, or Cochin International Airport (COK) in Kerala, which is about 190 KMS away. From Madurai, you can hire a pre-booked taxi or take a state transport bus to Thekkady (Kumily). The journey takes around 3. 5 to 4 hours. From Cochin (Kochi), the drive is longer, taking about 5 to 6 hours, but the route is highly scenic. A pre-arranged private taxi is the most convenient way from either airport to Kumily (Thekkady).

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Kottayam Railway Station (KTYM), located about 114 KMS from Thekkady. Alternatively, Madurai Railway Station (MDU) is another feasible option at a similar distance. From Kottayam, travelers can hire a cab directly to Kumily (Thekkady), which takes around 3 hours, or take a local bus service. The train journey offers a comfortable way to reach the region before the final leg by road.

By Road: Pandikuzhi is easily accessible by road from Kumily, the town center for Thekkady. It is located on the route towards Chellarkovil. The drive from Kumily to the base of the viewpoint is approximately 9-10 KMS. State-run buses and private tourist buses frequently ply from major cities like Kochi, Munnar, Kottayam, and Madurai to Kumily. The final stretch of the road may be a bit rough and narrow, making a jeep or a local taxi the most practical option for the last few kilometers to the prime viewing point.

By Local Transport: The most common and recommended local transport to Pandikuzhi is a local jeep taxi. Jeeps are sturdy and can navigate the slightly challenging final stretch of the road. You can hire a jeep from Kumily which often includes Pandikuzhi as part of a half-day 'viewpoint tour' that also covers spots like Chellarkovil. Auto-rickshaws can also take you there, but they might struggle on the steeper or rougher sections. Taxis can be hired for round trips from any hotel in Thekkady (Kumily).
