Place Details: History of Pilak: Pilak is an extraordinary archaeological site dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries, representing a harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. The area is spread across a vast 10 square kilometers, housing numerous terracotta plaques, stone images, and large sculptures. Cultural Significance: It was once a part of the ancient kingdom of Samatata and exhibits artistic influences from the Pala and Gupta dynasties. The site features various mounds such as Shyam Sundar Tila and Thakurani Tila, which were excavated by the ASI. Excavations: Massive stone images of Avalokiteshvara and Narasimha were discovered here, showcasing the high level of craftsmanship of the era. These findings establish Pilak as a significant center for religious study and historical exploration in the Northeast. Scenic Surroundings: The site is surrounded by lush green valleys and a small hilly rivulet known as the Pilak Stream, making it a peaceful retreat for history buffs. Many of the original statues are now preserved in the Agartala Museum, but several large rock-cut figures remain at the site.

By Air: The nearest airport is Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, located about 120 km away; from there, one can hire a taxi or take a bus.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Agartala, though recent expansions have brought rail connectivity closer to Belonia or Sabroom, which are much nearer.

By Road: Pilak is well-connected by the National Highway; regular buses and private cabs ply from Agartala and Udaipur to Jolaibari throughout the day.

By Local Transport: Once at Jolaibari, local auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are readily available to take you to the different tila sites within the archaeological zone.
