How To Reach Star View Point

Haflong, Assam, India
Star View Point, officially referred to by locals and some directories as Haflong Town View or Muolpong, is one of the most accessible and captivating viewpoints in Haflong, the only hill station in Assam. It offers a breathtaking panoramic vista of the entire Haflong town nestled amidst the azure h ills of the Dima Hasao district. Located merely 500 meters from the bustling main bazaar, it serves as a tranquil escape and a perfect spot to appreciate the region's natural splendour. The viewpoint provides a complete visual narrative of the town’s layout, surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery. Visitors often describe the atmosphere here as profoundly serene, enhanced by a cool, refreshing breeze that sweeps across the hilltop. An observation tower, though simple in structure, provides an elevated vantage point for an even wider view. The sight is particularly enchanting during the early mornings, when the valley is often shrouded in mist, or late evenings, when the town lights begin to twinkle against the backdrop of a setting sun. The surrounding area is relatively undeveloped, maintaining a rustic charm that appeals to nature lovers and photographers. It’s a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to relax, unwind, and soak in the majestic beauty of the North Cachar Hills. The simplicity of the place—just the view, the breeze, and the silence—is its greatest asset. Small local vendors sometimes set up stalls nearby, offering authentic local snacks, which adds a touch of local experience to the visit. The viewpoint embodies the nickname given to Haflong, the "Switzerland of the East," by showcasing its pristine, unadulterated natural landscape. It truly acts as a perfect introduction to the mesmerizing scenery that the Dima Hasao region has to offer to its visitors.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Silchar's Kumbhirgram Airport (IXS), which is approximately 84 KMS from Haflong. From the airport, you can hire a private taxi or take a shared cab to reach Haflong. The drive is scenic but can take around 3 to 4 hours due to the hilly terrain. The other alternative is Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is much further, about 330 KMS away. From Guwahati, one would need to take a direct taxi, bus, or connect via train.

By Train: Haflong is well-connected by a meter-gauge railway line that has recently been converted to broad gauge. The nearest major railway station is New Haflong Railway Station (NHLG), which is about 3 KMS from the town center. There are direct trains connecting New Haflong to major cities like Guwahati and Silchar. Once you arrive at the station, you can take a local auto-rickshaw or taxi into the town. Another important nearby station is Lumding Junction (LMG), which is a major railway hub.

By Road: Haflong is accessible by road from key cities in Assam and neighboring states. The town lies on a major road network. You can hire private taxis or take state-run or private bus services from Guwahati (330 KMS) or Silchar (84 KMS). The journey by road from Guwahati can take 8 to 10 hours, offering a very scenic, winding route through the hills. From Silchar, the journey is shorter and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The roads, though winding, are generally in reasonable condition.

By Local Transport: To reach the Star View Point from the center of Haflong town (Main Bazaar), the best option is local transport. Since the viewpoint is only about 0. 5 KMS away, you can easily walk for about 10-15 minutes, which is recommended for the fresh air and local experience. Alternatively, local auto-rickshaws or shared taxis are readily available in the town center and can take you directly to the viewpoint for a very nominal fare. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey.
