Kartok Monastery
Kartok Monastery is one of the three most important religious institutions in Yuksom, the others being Dubdi and Ngadak. It is named after a celebrated lama, Kartok Kuntu Zangpo, who played a pivotal role in the coronation of the first king of Sikkim. The monastery is an exquisite example of Tibeta n Buddhist architecture, featuring a vibrant red facade with golden accents that stand out against the backdrop of the emerald green hills. Inside the monastery, the atmosphere is heavy with the scent of juniper incense and the low hum of monks chanting their daily prayers. The walls are adorned with intricate Thangka paintings and frescoes depicting various Buddhist deities and scenes from the life of Guru Rinpoche. The main altar houses a majestic statue of Lord Buddha surrounded by traditional butter lamps. This monastery belongs to the Nyingma sect, the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism. Its proximity to the holy Kartok Lake makes it a central part of the spiritual life of the villagers.
