Travel Tips Of Sankri Village

Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India
Sankri is a picturesque hamlet that functions as the base camp for over 25 high-altitude treks, making it a hub for adventurers worldwide. As the starting point for the Har Ki Dun trek, this village offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and Himalayan grandeur. The settlement is relatively small, h ome to about 300 residents who primarily belong to the Garhwali community. Visitors are greeted by the sight of traditional wooden houses and terraced fields that produce red rice and apples. The village atmosphere is deeply tranquil, characterized by the crisp mountain air and the distant sound of the Supin River. Historically, Sankri has been the threshold where modernization meets ancient Himalayan traditions. It provides the last bit of mobile connectivity and electricity before trekkers head into the wilderness. The hospitality here is legendary, with many locals opening their homes as homestays. These stays offer a glimpse into the resilient lifestyle of the mountain folk who have lived in harmony with nature for generations. The village serves as an essential acclimatization point for trekkers arriving from lower altitudes like Dehradun. Beyond its role as a base camp, Sankri is a destination for those seeking peace away from urban chaos. The surrounding forests of pine and deodar create a verdant canopy that changes hues with every season. In the morning, the village is often draped in mist, while the evenings bring clear, star-studded skies. It is not just a transit point but a cultural experience where stories of the Mahabharata are still part of daily conversation.

Tourism Tips

Health and Safety: Since Sankri is at nearly 2,000 meters, stay hydrated to avoid mild altitude sickness. There is a small dispensary in the village, but the nearest major hospital is in Purola (35 KMS away). Always carry a basic first-aid kit with medicines for motion sickness and headaches.

Packing Essentials: Even in summer, nights in Sankri are cold. Pack at least three layers of clothing, including a fleece jacket and a windbreaker. If visiting in winter, heavy down jackets, woolen thermals, and waterproof trekking boots are mandatory.

Cash and Connectivity: There are NO ATMs in Sankri. The last reliable ATM is in Purola, but it often runs out of cash. It is strictly advised to withdraw enough cash in Dehradun. Mobile network is very patchy; BSNL works best, while Jio and Airtel have limited signals near certain spots.

Accommodation and Booking: During peak trekking months like May, June, and December, homestays and guest houses get fully booked. Always book your stay at least two weeks in advance. Opting for a local homestay is better than a hotel as it provides a more authentic experience and helps the local economy directly.
