How To Reach Allahabad Fort

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India
Historical Significance: The Allahabad Fort is a massive military fortress commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583 at the sacred confluence (Triveni Sangam) of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Its strategic location made it one of the largest and strongest garrisons of the Mughal Empire. Akbar initially named the surrounding city Illahabas (Abode of God), which evolved into Allahabad. The fort later played a crucial role under the British, serving as a key military depot and prison, and witnessed the transfer of power from the British to the Indian Army in 1947. Architectural Blend and Current Use: Constructed primarily from durable red sandstone, the fort is a striking example of a blend of Mughal and Hindu/Indian architectural styles. Today, the majority of the fort remains under the exclusive control of the Indian Army, which uses it as an ordnance depot. Consequently, only a small portion, which includes the revered Akshayavat (Immortal Banyan Tree), the underground Patalpuri Temple, and the Ashoka Pillar, is open to the public. Monuments Within: The fort is a treasure trove of history, housing some of Prayagraj’s most significant artifacts, including the polished sandstone Ashoka Pillar dating back to the 3rd century BCE, and the mythical Saraswati Koop (well). The contrast between the massive military walls and the ancient religious structures inside is a powerful symbol of Indian history.
