Details of a Red Hat Gem: Phyang Monastery, also known as Tashi Chozong (meaning 'Skyob's Religious Assembly Place'), is a significant Buddhist monastery situated on a hill top in Phyang village, approximately 17 KMS west of Leh. It belongs to the Drikung Kagyu sect (often considered a 'Red Hat' sec t), which was the first order of the Drikung teachings in Ladakh. The monastery was founded in 1515 by Tashi Namgyal, the King of Ladakh, and is distinguished by its 900-year-old museum, which houses a remarkable collection of ancient weapons, thangkas, idols, and artifacts. The monastery complex is celebrated for its exquisite wall paintings (frescoes) dating back to the royal period, offering a deep glimpse into the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of the region.
